Smoke Offering Rituals

烟供法事

With great compassion, dedicate merit and benefit all beings.

An offering of fragrance and prayer, expressing generosity and care for beings experiencing suffering.

A fragrant expression of generosity

Smoke offerings use the fragrance of burning incense or prepared substances as a focus for ritual giving. Accompanied by prayers and visualisation, the offering expresses a wish to share nourishment, comfort and favourable conditions beyond the limits of an ordinary material gift.

The intention behind the offering

Buddhist smoke-offering traditions take different forms. Some emphasise purification and offerings to objects of refuge; others emphasise generosity towards beings experiencing hunger or suffering. The intended recipients and ritual details depend on the liturgy.

The common thread is an expansive intention: loosening self-centred attachment and cultivating care for beings we may never see or know.

How the practice is approached

The officiant prepares and offers the substances according to the selected practice. Participants may join the prayers, hold a personal dedication or listen with a quiet and attentive mind. The meaning lies in the offering and its intention, rather than in the amount of smoke produced.

Before taking part

Ask GSLC which smoke-offering practice is being conducted and how your dedication can be included. If incense or smoke affects your comfort, discuss attendance arrangements beforehand. Any materials for the offering should follow the officiant’s instructions.
